Products & materials

WPC stands for Wood Plastic Composite — a blend of recycled wood fibres and recycled plastic pressed together under heat. The result looks and feels like natural timber, but behaves completely differently:
- Will not rot, warp, crack or split
- Requires no painting, staining or sealing — ever
- Fully waterproof and frost-resistant
- UV-stabilised to resist colour fading
- B1 fire-rated (low flammability)
- Made from recycled materials — more eco-friendly than virgin timber
This is the most important decision before ordering:
- 5mm screens are slim, flexible cladding panels designed to be fixed flat against an existing fence, wall, pergola or exterior surface. They cannot be used freestanding and are not compatible with posts.
- 16mm screens are rigid structural panels. They can be used freestanding with our aluminium posts, or fixed to a surface. Choose 16mm if you want screens to stand independently in your garden.
✓ Yes All our WPC composite screens are engineered specifically for UK weather conditions — rain, frost, wind, and UV exposure. They are rated for temperatures from -40°C to +60°C, making them suitable for even the most exposed gardens and coastal locations.
✓ Yes — and they're free We offer two types of samples: a fence sample and a screen sample. These let you check colour, texture, strength and thickness before committing to a full order. Contact us to request yours.
Yes — composite screens can be painted if you'd like a custom colour. We recommend using a good-quality outdoor spray paint such as Rust-Oleum, followed by a waterproof sealant. Do bear in mind that painting will remove the zero-maintenance benefit — painted surfaces will need re-coating periodically, as with any outdoor painted product.
✓ Yes All composite screens can be cut using a jigsaw or circular saw. Cutting does not affect the weatherproofing or structural integrity — the WPC material is fully waterproof throughout, not just on the surface. If you want to retain the outer decorative border when cutting, cut the border first, then the screen, and reattach the border with glue, nails or screws.
Yes. Our WPC composite is made from recycled plastic and recycled wood — diverting waste materials from landfill. The products are also 100% recyclable at end of life. Choosing composite over virgin timber reduces your carbon footprint and eliminates the need for chemical preservatives, paints and stains over the product's lifetime.
Installation
8 questions
✓ Yes All our screens are designed for DIY installation — no specialist skills or trades required. You'll need a drill, a spirit level, a tape measure, and standard exterior screws (for 5mm panels). A single screen on a fence typically takes 15–20 minutes. A freestanding run of three screens with posts can be completed in 1–2 hours. Visit our full installation guide for step-by-step instructions.
Posts come complete with base plates and all fixings needed for your surface (concrete-in or bolt-down).
5mm cladding screens do not include screws. Standard 40mm exterior wood screws (available from B&Q, Wickes or Homebase) are all you need. Some customers prefer to use command strips for lightweight panels on smooth interior or exterior walls — that works perfectly well too.

Our aluminium posts have precision-engineered side channels. The 16mm screen panels simply slide directly into the channels — no screws, no adhesive. Fix the post base plates first, slot the screens in from the top, and the structure is complete. Posts are available in heights from 1ft to 7ft, in straight, corner, and adjustable-angle ("Anyway") varieties, in black, grey, cream and Corten finishes.
Yes — our "Anyway" adjustable-angle posts are designed specifically for sloping ground and uneven surfaces. They allow you to adjust the post angle to match the gradient, giving a level, professional finish even on challenging terrain. View the full posts range for details.
Yes. Use a masonry drill bit to create pilot holes, insert raw plugs, and drive exterior screws through the screen into the wall. We recommend leaving a small gap (5–10mm) between the screen and the wall surface to allow airflow, which reduces moisture build-up behind the panel and extends its life.
Our posts offer two base plate options:
- Concrete-in installation — the post is set directly into the ground with postcrete, giving maximum stability for permanent installations.
- Bolt-down installation — the base plate is bolted onto an existing hard surface (paving, concrete, decking). Ideal when you don't want to break up a surface.
Full step-by-step installation guides are available on our blog, including our detailed How to Install Garden Screens guide covering all three installation methods — fence cladding, freestanding with posts, and wall mounting. Video guides are also available on our YouTube channel.
In most cases, no. Garden screens and fences under 2 metres are generally covered by permitted development rights in England and Wales and don't require planning permission. If your installation will exceed 2 metres in height, or your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, check with your local planning authority before installation.
Care & maintenance
4 questions
WPC composite screens are very easy to clean. For routine cleaning, simply use a soft sponge with warm soapy water and rinse with a hose. For tougher marks, a soft brush works well. Avoid abrasive scourers or harsh chemical cleaners, which can mark the surface. The screens are impermeable to water, soil and most outdoor stains.
Our WPC composite screens are built for a minimum of 25 years in UK weather conditions. Over one million screens have been delivered since 2017, and our first customers' screens are still looking great. Unlike timber, composite does not rot, warp, crack or require periodic treatment — so the 25-year lifespan requires no effort on your part.
✓ None required — ever This is one of the key advantages of WPC composite over timber. You will never need to paint, stain, oil or seal your screens. The colour and finish are integral to the material, not a surface coating. This saves significant time and money over the product's lifetime compared to traditional wooden screening.
Our WPC screens are UV-stabilised to resist colour fading. Some very slight weathering and tonal shift can occur in the first few months of outdoor exposure — this is entirely normal and stabilises quickly. After the initial weathering period, the colour remains consistent for the life of the product. The exception is Corten (weathering steel) screens, which are specifically designed to develop an evolving rust-orange patina over time — this is an intentional and desirable feature, not deterioration.

Measure the total length and height of the area you want to screen. Our large screens are 180cm x 90cm, medium screens are 120cm x 60cm, and trellises are 180cm x 30cm. Divide your total run length by the screen width to get the number of panels needed. Our team is happy to help with measurements — email hello@screenwithenvy.co.uk with your dimensions and we'll work it out for you.
✓ Yes Many of our screens are used indoors as decorative room dividers, wall art, feature panels behind headboards, or radiator covers. The same durability that makes them ideal outdoors means they'll last indefinitely indoors too. Our full screen range works beautifully in both settings.
For full privacy — blocking the view entirely — choose our 16mm large screens (180cm x 90cm) with aluminium posts. These are solid, opaque panels that can be arranged end-to-end to create a continuous privacy barrier. Our screen and post bundles include everything you need in one purchase. For decorative privacy with some light filtering, designs like Moucharabiya and Alhambra are popular — they give privacy from a distance while allowing light through their patterns.
